If you are considering Window Replacement as a remodeling project, take into account not only the cost of the windows but also the potential energy savings that you might expect. Contemporary replacement windows are better than ever at eliminating leaks, decreasing heat transfer and helping to make your home more energy efficient. You can also get windows that include special tinting or coatings that help keep ultraviolet rays from coming through and adding unwanted heat to your home.

A common remodeling project, especially in older homes and colder climates, window replacement is one of the best value and comfort upgrades you can add to your home. Completing such a project may not appear as useful as remodeling a kitchen or sun-room, but it can be a good investment in the structure of your home, and improve your comfort, while reducing energy cost and adding curb appeal.

Window technology has improved tremendously just in the last decade to the point where the improved looks, efficiency and performance makes window replacement a worthwhile remodeling project to consider. There are many manufacturers who specialize in replacement windows, designing them specifically for easy installation in existing window openings.

Once you are satisfied with the price, manufacturer, and installer, you can determine the level of quality of the actual product. You can choose from specs such as U-Value, R-Value, Air infiltration, etc. But I believe you can actually get more confused if you start trying to compare all of those numbers. Just ask if the product is an energy star rated window. If the answer is yes, then you know the specification meet the highest government standards. If the manufacturer is listed on the energy star site, you can be sure that the U-Value, R-Value, SHGC, and Air infiltration tests have met the requirements. So, now you can concentrate on some of the functional parts of your window. If you are in the market for a single hung or double hung window, ask about the mechanism that is used to hold up your window sashes. If they still use the old spring and string method (sometimes referred to as block and tackle), or the spiral metal balances, you are not getting a high quality window. The constant force balance system is more technologically advanced. It uses a titanium coil that is designed to last longer than you or I. Also, a good quality hung window will have sashes that can tilt in so you can clean the glass from inside the home.

Choosing a window replacement specialist for this project will go a long way toward making the entire project proceed efficiently. There is a real skill to changing out windows that helps to make sure the installation is air tight and solid enough to last a lifetime.

Extra Incentives to Replace Your Worn-Out Windows and Doors

Do you have worn-out, energy inefficient, unattractive windows and doors?

Are they eating you up with maintenance, or even rotting out or falling apart?

Do you just want an updated, attractive appearance, and at the same time enjoy added comfort, lower fuel bills, and less maintenance?

THERE MIGHT NOT BE A BETTER TIME THAN NOW TO ACT!!

Today there’s even more reason to improve your home’s energy efficiency with windows and doors, and solve the other issues you may have at the same time. As part of the recent stimulus legislation (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) residential and federal tax credits are now available through the 25c – Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credit when you purchase qualifying windows and doors. While this tax credit is an extension of a 2007 program that required ENERGY STAR as the minimum performance, the requirements for qualifying products for 2009 have changed. For related tax advice, please consult your tax advisor.

Eligibility, the windows and doors must have a u-value and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) equal to or less than .30 to qualify. AAA Windows and Doors will fit the appropriate window brand, with qualifying glazing and frame systems so that you can take advantage of this program. The products must be used to improve an existing home. This tax credit does not apply to new homes. The windows and doors must be “placed in service” between January 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. “Placed in service” is defined as when the property is ready and available for use. The structure must be the taxpayer’s primary residence.

The label identifies high-efficiency products that currently qualify for the Energy Star, but will not meet the more stringent requirements that go into full effect April1, 2010

Credit Amounts:

Receive a tax credit for 30% of the cost of qualifying products, excluding installation, up to $1,500. Qualified Until March 31, 2010

Advisory : New Year , New Numbers

For more Information please visit: www.energystar.gov

Claiming the Tax Credit:

Step 1: Purchase qualifying windows and/or doors.

Step 2: Retain the receipts that show the cost of the qualifying products (without installation charges) and save each NFRC and/or Energy Star label on each window or door. Keep these with your tax materials.

Step 3: Keep the manufacturers certification statement with your tax records.

Step 4: Submit the claim with your taxes for the year the windows and/or doors were installed.

Step 5: Always consult your tax advisor.

Please see us to determine the very best solution, for your home, at AAA Windows and Doors

THINKING ABOUT NEW WINDOWS ?

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN WINDOW SHOPPING:

Good conductor=poor insulator
You want energy efficient glass in your windows to block the outdoor elements.
Unfortunately, by itself, glass is a good conductor of heat and cold and lets unwanted temperatures inside your home.

Look for insulation within the glass.
Air is a poor conductor and is often used as an insulator between two sheets of glass. Other gases, such as krypton and argon, are even more effective insulators. Gas filled windows with multiple panes of glass will provide the ultimate protection against weather.

Heat Mirror Film insulates your glass and protects against UV light. U-Values are simply a way to rate windows. The lower the U-value, the higher the insulating power.

QUALITY GLASS DESERVES QUALITY FRAMING
After deterring the grade of glass, you must select a frame. Your main choices are wood and vinyl. Consider the perks of each: Wood is good insulator, thought it is relatively expensive and needs upkeep. Wood windows should last between fifteen and twenty years. Vinyl is currently a popular choice because it is affordable and maintenance-free. Vinyl windows usually come with lifetime guarantees.
